Bogd Khan Mountain National Park is one of the world’s oldest protected areas, offering scenic mountain landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage just outside Mongolia's capital city.
Bogd Khan Mountain National Park, located immediately south of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, encompasses the sacred Bogd Khan Mountain, which has been protected since 1778—making it one of the oldest state-designated protected areas in the world. The park covers roughly 67,300 hectares of rolling forested slopes, alpine meadows, and rocky outcroppings that rise sharply from the surrounding steppe. The mountain’s elevation reaches approximately 2,256 meters (7,402 feet) and is a critical refuge for diverse flora and fauna adapted to the harsh Mongolian climate. The ecosystem is a mix of Siberian pine forests, juniper shrublands, and patches of larch and birch, supporting native species such as Siberian roe deer, wild boar, marmots, and the elusive Siberian chipmunk, along with a variety of birds including hawks and woodpeckers. Historically, the mountain has deep cultural and spiritual significance to Mongolians, with ancient temples and shrines scattered throughout the park. Visitors enjoy hiking a network of trails that vary from leisurely forest walks to rugged summit ascents that provide panoramic views of Ulaanbaatar and the Mongolian steppe. The park offers year-round opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, and winter snowshoeing. Its proximity to Mongolia’s capital makes it an accessible outdoor retreat for locals and tourists alike, blending natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural reverence in a unique protected landscape.
